How To: Make a Bunting out of Fabric Samples

My friend recently gave me a whole box of fabric samples. It went in my pile of "garbage-like stuff that I know I can make something out of." Since I was planning a baby shower for my friend Merideth, this idea popped into my head. It was super easy, fast, cute and my favorite - resourceful!

What you'll need:
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Pins
  • Fabric Samples
  • Bias Tape
  • Scissors
  • Rotary Cutter and Cutting Mat
  • Pencil
  • Tacky Glue
  • Sharpie Marker (optional)

First, sketch out your banner to figure out how many panels you'll need, and what colors you want to use. I wanted mine to say "Hey, Baby!" with white lettering on alternating blue and yellow panels (our color theme for the shower) with a few spaces in between words and on the ends - thirteen panels in all.

Grab your fabric samples, and if they're bound together, cut them out as close to the edge as you can get. I went through and cut out all of the yellow, blue, and white panels so I could choose which ones looked best together. My fabric sample books had paper tabs on one side, which was perfect because they ended up weighing down the bottom of each panel.

Trim across the tops of all of your panels so that they're each an even height.

Now that you've got your nice, even panels, separate them by color...

And lay them out in the pattern that you want them in.

Next, sandwich each panel inside the bias tape, pin, and sew. I started pinning mine in the very center so that each panel was evenly spaced, and so I could see what length of bias tape I needed to fit all of my panels.

Next, outline your letters in pencil.

And cut them out.

Use the tacky glue to glue them to the banner. If you'd like, outline the letters in sharpie marker. Mine needed this in order to stand out!

And you're done!

Party time!

  1. I know this is an older post, but I'm very interested in it! I'm going to try to make a fabric bunting for my twin girls' first birthday. Hopefully, I will be able to put it all together!!
