 A sweet little baby quilt...

...inspired by this brick wall that I pass on my walk to work everyday. 

These colors are my favorite. I could make a million more blue and orange quilts. And I probably will!

Pastel Love Baby Quilt

This little cutie has been in my work-in-progress bin since the RI Modern Quilt Guild issued our jelly roll challenge back in...yikes...February!

This quilt was more of an experiment than anything - a way to push myself to try out some new free-motion quilting techniques.  But it turned out so cute and sweet that it's a perfect quilt for a new baby girl.

Make it Modern Challenge Quilt

A few months ago, the Rhode Island Modern Quilt Guild issued a "make it modern" challenge.  Our task was to take something from traditional quilting and update it for the modern aesthetic.

Here's my project:

I updated flying geese with modern colors, a wonky layout, and some punchy sass. This was my first time trying a different kind of quilting - an overall pattern with a section where something different is going on: the little rebel goose who is flying away from the pack has her own trajectory of quilting lines.

My favorite part of this quilt: definitely the black and white fabric.  I love how it looks as a binding.  And I have more!

Tiny Toes

Last week, my brother and sister-in-law welcomed their daughter, Mazie, into the world.  She is perfectly pink and sweet!  I am so proud and excited to begin a new chapter of my life as her auntie!

She's home safe and sound now and the family is settling into a new routine.  My brother called me to tell me this sweet story: during the night, when it's his turn to soothe the sleepless baby, he settles in to the glider and rocks little Mazie.  He tucks the corner of the circus quilt that I made for them behind his head, and drapes it over both of them with the light shining through, so they're all warm and cozy.  In their circus-themed baby room, they feel like they're in their very own circus tent!  

It warms my heart to know that something I made can provide comfort during those long, newborn nights.

I get to meet her in a few weeks!  There will be pictures!

My Favorite Quilt Yet!

Folks, this is my favorite quilt yet: a circus quilt for my soon-to-arrive niece. When my brother and sister-in-law told me that they were going to have a circus-themed nursery (which makes perfect sense given their line of work!) I couldn't wait to track down the perfect fabric for the challenge!

Lucky for me, this new line of fabrics, Bazaar the Circus by Print & Pattern, had just been released and was totally perfect.

I had so much fun fussy-cutting each of the animals and featuring them in their own little box.  This owl  is my favorite...how he just stands there with his flag....it makes me giggle!

The other totally fun part was picking out fabrics that would complement the circus.  These are so fun and joyful all together!  Especially on the back of the quilt.  

I can't wait for this baby to arrive, and for her to get wrapped up in her very own custom quilt! 

My brother & sister-in-law were pretty thrilled.  I love it when I can deliver just what someone is looking for!

Baby Blue Quilt

This quilt was a little fun and experimentation with selecting and combining my own collection of fabrics.  

I started with the novelty print of vehicles and built some solids, dots, stripes, and prints around it.  

  I quilted this one vertically, horizontally, and on the diagonals.

 You can see the quilting a little clearer on the back.

Twin Quilts

 A friend of mine from college just had twin baby girls! I was so excited to make some cozy quilts for these little ones to snuggle up in.

Special Booties

I know that I call every baby project I complete "special," but this one really takes the cake.

These little booties are for my very first little niece or nephew, who will be joining this world in January.

I am on a mission to be the greatest aunt that ever was.  Any tips???

A Special Baby Quilt

I've been quiet on the blog lately because I have a lot of secret projects in the works.  But one of those secrets was revealed at a baby shower yesterday!

My modern sampler blocks made it into their final form - a baby quilt for Ian's cousin Katie.

I've come to really love this 38" square size.  It's perfect as a play mat, or a little blankie for a stroller.  (And it's small enough that I can try some new quilting techniques and it's not too hard/intimidating to maneuver in my machine.)

For this quilt, I used my walking foot to quilt parallel diagonal lines that converge in the quilt center. 

After hanging on to it for a couple of months, it was finally time for delivery at the shower yesterday.

Grandma Nita, cousin Katie, and cousin Courtney loved it!

And it wasn't the only handmade hit of the day - Ian's mom also knit a gorgeous baby blanket.  There's no question - this baby will be very, very, loved.

I titled this post "A Special Baby Quilt" - but really, every quilt (especially ones for babies) is special!
